The web browser has been the most stable interface in computing for two decades. Beyond blue links
Arc (from The Browser Company) is the most ambitious reimagining of what a browser can be. Its AI features go far beyond chatbot sidebars. Arc’s “Browse for Me” doesn’t return links — it reads the top results, synthesizes them, and presents a structured answer with citations. Ask “what’s the best mirrorless camera under $1,000?” and Arc produces a comparison table with pros, cons, prices, and links to source reviews, generated on the fly from actual web content.
Arc’s “Spaces” feature uses AI to organize browsing context. Your work projects, personal research, and shopping all live in separate spaces with their own tabs, bookmarks, and AI context. The browser understands which space you’re in and tailors search results, suggestions, and AI assistance accordingly. It’s less like a browser and more like a digital workspace that happens to browse the web.
Perplexity has taken an even more radical approach: it’s not a browser at all in the traditional sense, but an AI-powered answer engine that’s increasingly used as a browser replacement. Instead of navigating to websites, users ask questions and receive synthesized answers with inline citations. Perplexity’s “Pages” feature can generate entire research documents from a single query, complete with sections, citations, and related questions.
Perplexity’s growth has been explosive — from roughly 10 million monthly active users in early 2024 to over 100 million by mid-2026. It’s the first service to genuinely challenge Google’s search dominance not with a better search engine, but with a fundamentally different model: answers instead of links.
The incumbent response
Google and Microsoft have responded with AI features integrated into their existing browsers. Chrome’s AI features now include automatic page summarization, AI-powered “find on page” that understands semantic queries (“find the part about pricing”), and a sidebar that can answer questions about the current page. But these are additions to the traditional browser paradigm, not replacements for it.
Microsoft Edge has gone further, deeply integrating Copilot into the browsing experience. Its “Copilot Vision” feature can see and understand the page you’re looking at, answering questions about visual content, comparing products, and extracting structured information. The advantage of integration with an existing browser is that it works with the web as it exists — every site, every web app — rather than requiring a new interaction model.
What’s at stake
The browser revolution isn’t just about user experience — it’s about who controls the gateway to the internet. Google’s search advertising business generates over $200 billion annually, built on the model of showing ads alongside search results. AI answer engines that don’t show traditional search results fundamentally threaten that model.
Perplexity and Arc are experimenting with new monetization approaches: subscription-based pro tiers with advanced AI features, transaction fees for commerce searches, and enterprise licensing for research and knowledge management. None has yet demonstrated a business model that can match the scale of search advertising, but the user experience improvements are compelling enough that the market is granting them time to figure it out.
Publishers are watching nervously. When an AI browser synthesizes answers from multiple sources, users may never visit the original pages — depriving publishers of the traffic and ad revenue that sustain their operations. Several major publishers have filed lawsuits or negotiated licensing deals, and the outcome of these negotiations will shape the economics of web publishing for decades.

The browser is being reinvented for the first time in a generation. The shift from “find information” to “get answers” is as fundamental as the shift from directories to search engines in the 1990s.
